Brandi Burrows - Black Belt

Brandi Burrows is officially the first black belt of 646 Martial Arts. Brandi started as a white belt 8 years ago and was Mr. Carter's first student. Read her inspiring story below.

My Journey to Black Belt
By: Brandi Burrows

Working towards my black belt has not been easy. Through out my 8 years in Karate there were definitely times I felt like stopping but I kept on going because if I stopped I knew I would never reach the top like I have today. Karate has been such a challenge, and I am so happy that I did not stop when it kept getting harder and more challenging. Eight years was a long time to dedicate myself to something. It means so much to me to be able to say that I have dedicated myself to one thing in my life, to get this far and make it all the way here is so incredible to me.

When I was younger I always quit the sports that I tried: Softball, gymnastics, ballet, even dance. I never really felt like I fit that sport. Until I had my first karate lesson in the living room at Aunt Pat's house. Then I knew I was hooked. Mr. Carter took us from her living room to his living room to his garage to his first gym then the gym he has now. Mr. Carter , it is very hard for me to put into words how I feel about you because I feel like you are not only my instructor but part of my family. I want you to know how proud I am and how amazing it is for me to be your first student and your first Black Belt. The methods of your teaching have always stressed the importance of a positive attitude, encouragement and motivation which is how I would like to be as an instructor. Leigh Ann and Rosalie are also a huge part of my life and always will be and I thank you for that also.

I want to thank all of the people who have helped to make me the person I am today and supporting me, being proud of me and having the faith in me so that I could stand here today with this black belt. Everyone in this studio from the parents, the instructors, the children and the other students have all been a contribution on this journey. This studio is my home away from home. It has instilled in me better morals and a more positive, confident outlook on life. This is not just a school or a place to learn awesome tricks but is a family, a community on its own. And the lessons we learn here I know we all carry with us to the outside world and make this world a better place. I have learned that blood sweat and tears as terrible as that sounds is actually a good thing. It shows how much devotion and work we have all put into every stripe earned and overall every belt promotion. I have more pride in my life and more passion towards this than I have ever had towards anything else in my life.
